Introduction to Electronic Mail

When you have finished this project, you will be able to:
set up an email account
send and receive e-mail
describe e-mail rules and acceptable use
end an Internet session

describe the following terms:

  • browser
  • e-mail
  1. As you work with computers, you will be using electronic mail (Email) extensively, so it is necessary for you to obtain and learn to use email effectively.

  2. If you currently are taking both a computer programming class and a web design class you will only need to do this assignment once. Speak to your teacher and send an e-mail using the appropriate format to inform him/her that you will be doing this assignment for both of your classes. If you took a class in another semester, you must complete this assignment again.

  3. Even if you currently have an e-mail address with another Internet Service Provider (ISP) or another free e-mail account, and to ensure that you give fully accurate names and appropriate information to send to you teacher, please register for a new account that you can use exclusively for class work. Only if your current account has accurate information, it may be acceptable for class work. Speak to your teacher to find out if yours is acceptable.

  4. In this assignment, you will learn what electronic mail is, how to use it, and then you will obtain your personal e-mail account.

  5. Prior to obtaining and using an e-mail account, you need to be aware of the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). If you need to review the AUP, click on the link below:

Ross Sheppard High School Acceptable Use Policy

  6. When writing e-mail, there are a few "rules" that are acceptable throughout the Internet neighbourhood. It is important that you learn what these rules and acceptable methods of use are. There is a good beginner's guide to e-mail located at the following URL. Go to the links and review all of the information there. Answer the questions on the Question Sheet as you read through the following, this will help you understand the material easier

A Beginner's Guide to Effective Email
    http://www.webfoot.com/advice/email.top.html

  7. Remember!! Work through the entire contents of the web site and answer all questions on the answer sheet before proceeding.

  8. Now that you understand the basics of acceptable e-mail use, it is time to subscribe to your personal account. Quickly review the steps that follow first so you have some idea of what you will be doing then follow the steps one by one.

Note that Ross Sheppard High School accepts no responsibility for the contents of e-mail that you might receive while using your e-mail account
This e-mail account is supplied by a third party not in any way associated with Ross Sheppard High School, Edmonton Public School, nor its staff.
If you feel uncomfortable obtaining and using this account, then please see your teacher immediately.

  11. Start your subscription to AEMail4u by completing the form presented. All information must be accurate and true !!! Make sure you do not request to get additional information. because this will have the company send you advertising.

  12. Go through the rest of the registration forms answering appropriately. You will probably not accept the "offers"

  13. Like many free web sites or free services, the costs of operation the service must be covered by someone. Advertisers are the ones providing the financial resources needed to provide the e-mail service. This means that you will be provided with many "Pop up" ads and other offers. Make sue that you do not accept any downloads from these advertisements.

  14. Don't forget your User name and Password

NOTE: Because you will be using this e-mail account for school purposes, you MUST use your proper names – nicknames are NOT acceptable.
Use the following format for your USER ID: first initial and last name. For example, jheslinga.
If someone else has already used that USER ID, then use your first initial, second initial and last name. For example, jjheslinga.

  15. When you've completed all of the spaces on the form, submit the form to AEmail4u.com. In a short time, you will receive an e-mail account. Be sure to remember your password – but keep it private – for the next time you need to log in to AEmail4u.

Note: you can access your AEmail4u account from any Internet connection - at school, at home, or anywhere else

  16. Now that you have your subscription to your free AEmail4u account, it is time to begin using it.

  17. Normally you would now send an e-mail message to your teacher. Ask your teacher What would be the best way of showing how you did this assignment:

This information should appear in the TO: box on your email message.

  18. In the SUBJECT: box, type My first e-mail message

  19. In the body of the message, type the following information, each on a separate line:

A greeting such as: Dear Mr Heslinga, (Or your teacher's name)
    Your full name
Your class, for example: Computer Programming 10
Your class period, and Day for example: Day B, Period 2
A brief description of what you already know about the Internet, electronic mail, and web page programming.
As a new paragraph, introduce yourself to your teacher by typing some information about yourself - your last school attended, your interests, hobbies – anything that you think your teacher might be interested in.

  20. When you have completed the message, be sure to type the closing, just as you would in a friendly or formal letter. A typical closing might look like this: (You may even want to set it as an automatic closing in the e-mail account.)

    Regards,
    Your first and last name
    Your class and period number
    Your ID number

NOTE: every email that you send MUST include your name, class, period, and ID number.

  21. After you proof read you e-mail message for content and accuracy, click the Send button and it will be delivered to the addressee of the message.

  22. Some of your assignments will be handed in to your teacher using e-mail. All e-mail messages sent to your teacher must contain the following information:

Your name, I.D. Number, the class, and the period
The SUBJECT: line of the message must contain the name of the assignment you want marked.

  23. You are now ready to continue on to the next assignment.
