Mounting Your Home Page on an Internet Server

When you have finished this project, you will be able to:
set up a Web server account
upload your Web site to a Web server

describe the following terms:

  • Web server
  • host
  1. Before you can mount your web pages on an Internet server, you need to have a set of home pages that are complete and that work properly.

  2. Make sure that all of the file names specified in your HTML page and the files names are exactly the same - the names should all be lower case.

  3. Choose one of your previous home pages (or create a new one) that demonstrates your understanding of basic HTML programming.

  4. Test your home page to ensure that it works.

  5. Go to one of the following web site and open an account (note: you may choose other hosting sites as long as they do not violate our Acceptable Use Policy):

    Geocities Web Page Hosting
    http://www.geocities.com

    Tripod
    http://www.tripod.com

    Xoom
    http://www.xoom.com

    RoachHost
    http://www.roachhrost.com

  6. Once you have read the instructions at the hosting site, upload your web pages.

  7. Note that, in general, each of the Web hosting services requires file names to be all small letters. Before uploading your files, change all file names so that they only contain small letters. In addition, ensure that any files referred to in your html pages use only small letters. If you are not careful about this, then you will find that your Web pages will not work properly after they are uploaded.

  8. Test your entire home page on your host.

  9. Click here to see the marking guide for this project.

  10. Once everything is working, create a Text file name URL. Place your URL in the file. Your teacher will use this file to find your mounted web site

  11. Save the project folder in your "Hand In" folder on your personal disk space so that this project can be graded..
