Screen Capture

When you have finished this project, you will be able to:
capture your computer screen area
modify the screen capture
create an image file from the screen capture that can be used on a Web page

  1. Create a new folder called "Screen Capture" to place all of the workyou will be doing.

  2. The purpose of learning how to create, manipulate, and use a screen capture is to be able to include a representation of what you see on your monitor in a Web page as a graphic. Often times this is used for instructional purposes. (How to use a computer or other graphics that may be on the screen.

  3. Capturing the image on your screen is a simple process, veiwing the capture is easy because there are many applications that will allow you to do this. Paint Shop Pro is one example of such software.

  4. The next time you start Paint Shop Pro, click on Capture on the Menu Bar.

  5. You can adjust the settings to suit your needs. Try using the Capture in Paint Shop Pro now.

  6. Another way to capture a screen image is to use the [Print Screen] key located on your keyboard.

  7. When you press the [Print Screen] key, a copy of what ever is on your screen is sent to the Clipboard for use later on - or until you copy something else to the clipboard. The Clipboard is a memory location inthe computer that the computer uses to save information to use between programs.

  8. Press the [Print Screen] key now. An image of this page has been placed on the clipboard.

  9. Start Paint Shop Pro.

  10. On the Menu Bar, click Edit, then Paste, then As new image.

  11. The clipboard image will appear on the workspace in Paint Shop Pro.

  12. In Paint Shop, use the cropping tool to draw a marquee around the area of the image you need.

  13. Once you have the portion of the image you require selected, click Edit on the Menu Bar, then Copy.

  14. This new image has now been placed on the clipboard.

  15. On the Menu Bar click Edit, then Paste, and then As new image.

  16. This will place a new image - that is the cropped image that you selected - on your Paint Shop work space.

  17. You can now save this as a GIF image or a JPG image for use on your Web page. (Use "save as" and then select "Compuserve Graphic Interchange File" when saving.) (you should have a .psp file, and a .gif file )

  18. Crop part of the image of the page that you captured and save it as Screen Capture on your personal drive.

  19. Try a few more screen captures and crops of differnet software "screens" that you use.

  20. Click here to see the marking guide for this project.

  21. Once you have finished the screen capture, make sure it is in your "Hand In" folder on your personal drive space so that it can be marked.

  22. You will be using a copy of this file in one of the next projects.
