What makes a great Web page?
| |
When you have finished this project, you will be able to: |
 |
critique a Web page |
 |
find Web sites relevant to a given topic |
 |
describe the elements of good Web page design |
Web Pages are not really "Slapped together". They have certain designs and styles to make them easier
to read, use and understand. These items are not always "rules" that should be followed but they are
directions that you can use to make your pages better. Follow the links you see here and go through them thoroughly.
- Click here to start learn a bit about Web Page design. You will return to this page once you have finished.
- Click here to open the Web Site Critique
Document. Save it on your personal drive it is the assignment you will
need to fill in.
- Type your responses directly on the worksheet, being sure to save your document
each time you complete a response.
- Visit each of the following Web sites and using Word, make or jot down some notes
on the elements of each page that you liked, and elements that you did not like. Save this document as Introduction
to Design.
- Be sure to record the complete URL of each Web Site.
Chapters - http://www.chapters.ca
Coca-cola - http://www.coke.com
IBM - http://www.ibm.com
GAP - http://www.gap.com
Microsoft - http://www.microsoft.com
- Now, go to the Web site below, at which experts discuss poor Web Site design. Be sure to add your notes to
the Introduction to Design file you started earlier.

Vincent Flanders' Web Sites That Suck - http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/
- Visit the Web site below. Be sure to add your notes to the Introduction to Design file you started earlier.
Jacob Nielson's Current Issues in Web Usability - http://www.useit.com/alertbox/
- The above sites should provide you with some indication of the challenges that you will face during this course.
- Start a new Word document called Bookmarks and add the URLs of the two Web sites above to it. Be sure
to add new Web design related bookmarks to this file as you find them. Below each URL, type a brief description
of the contents of the site.
Note: when you add the URLs to your Bookmark file, you need to add the entire URL, including
the http:// portion.
- Use your favourite search engine to find three additional Web sites on Web page design. Add the URLs and a
brief description of each Web site to your Bookmark file.
- Once you have completed this project, Create a folder called "Web Site Critiques", and place all
of your work in it. Place the folder into your "Hand in Folder on your Disk Space.
- Your teacher will be marking the following items for this project:
- the Critique document
- Your comments of the web sites.
- The URLs on Web Page Design
- Continue on to the next project by clicking on the link in the navigation frame to the left.
